The retainer process

Post-treatment consultation
Once your active orthodontic treatment is complete, we’ll schedule a visit to review your results and scan your teeth for retainer fabrication. Dr. Kim will walk you through how often to wear your retainer based on your unique case.

Custom retainer design
We use digital scans or impressions to craft a retainer that fits perfectly. Depending on your needs, this might be a removable clear retainer, a fixed wire behind your teeth, or a traditional acrylic model.

Fitting and instructions
When your retainer is ready, we’ll ensure it fits comfortably and provide detailed care instructions. You’ll learn when to wear it, how to clean it, and what to expect as your smile adjusts to retention mode.

Ongoing check-ins
We’ll continue to monitor your retainer and alignment during periodic visits. If you ever lose or damage your retainer, we can quickly create a replacement to keep your smile on track.
Frequently asked questions
Find answers to common questions from our clients.
Every smile is different, but most patients wear their retainers full-time at first, then transition to nighttime wear indefinitely. Teeth can shift throughout life, so wearing your retainer at night helps maintain results long-term.
We offer removable clear retainers (like Essix), bonded retainers (a fixed wire behind the teeth), and traditional Hawley retainers. Dr. Kim will help you decide which option fits best based on your treatment and lifestyle.
No worries—just call us as soon as possible. We’ll schedule a quick scan or impression to create a new one and keep your smile from shifting. The sooner we replace it, the better we can protect your results.
